What A Scoop! Interview w/ “Dynamite” Doug Summers

Scoops: What a Scoop! Hey everyone Scoops McGinty here with another exclusive interview, this time with former NCW Heavyweight Champion “Dynamite” Doug Summers! First off I want to thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule, and talking with us today.

Summers: Not a problem at all Scoops, it’s my pleasure.

Scoops: Before we get into the meat of our conversation, a quick rundown on the history of Doug Summers. Born in Panic, Pennsylvania before relocating to Carolina, RI you were trained at Slamtech University by “Brutal” Bob Evans and “Revolution” Chris Venom. You debuted with NCW over five years ago in 2005, eventually winning the New England Championship and then the Heavyweight Title, which you held for a record 18 months.

Summers: Wow Scoops, you do your homework. Which makes sense since you’re a High School sophomore.

Scoops: Before you came to NCW, you were primarily considered a tag team specialist, leading ‘The Doug Summers Experience’ in Ringside Wrestling [a Slamtech developmental promotion] while teaming with Rocco Abruzzi as D-Unit in New England Championship Wrestling (NECW). How was it transitioning from tag team wrestling to singles wrestling in your NCW career?

Summers: It was exhilarating to be honest. I had been doing tag team stuff for a couple of years, and while it was a lot of fun I knew I had the capability to be more than just one half of a dynamic duo. Getting to work Paul Hudson in my NCW debut was fantastic; because he taught me so much in that first match. He showed me my strengths, and my weaknesses. I learned from that, and even though I came up on the losing end, it helped pave the way for my future and helped me defeat Hudson for the New England Title later that year.

Scoops: When you led ‘The Doug Summers Experience’ in Ringside, and there there was one specific member of your team that springs to mind, him being Scotty “By GOD” Vegas…

Summers: I see what you did there.

Scoops: Beyond your previous relationship with Vegas, you also mentioned Scotty Vegas by name last Season while you battled “The Portuguese Sensation” Ruy Batello, bringing Vegas up as one of the core guys that stepped up to the plate when Batello retired in 2006.

Summers: Listen, I’ll be completely straight with you. Scotty Vegas is one of the hardest workers in New England, bar none. He is always looking to improve, and always looking to adapt. When I brought Vegas  into Ringside, it was all about giving him a chance. When he debuted in NCW with Alex Chamberlin, even though he was feuding with my friends in Generation SLAM, I was impressed with his intensity and work ethic.

Scoops: When TheNCWOnline.com spoke with Vegas last, he claimed everyone was trying to hold him down. Whether it be the promoters in Maine, or the officials in NCW everyone is against him.

Summers: I think there’s some truth to that. Wrestling in Maine isn’t what it’s used to be, and you have to maximize the talent that you have. But I can’t really agree with that knowing he’s been a Champion up there, and someone who’s a former Tag Team Champion and multiple time New England Champion here isn’t being held down by any means. Scotty is his own worst enemy. He’s a blowhard whose overconfidence gets the better of him, not the front office. He still complains to this day about Alex Chamberlin being suspended from NCW after attacking Rob The Giant, breaking up The Maine State Posse in the process. You don’t think Chamberlin could return to NCW if he wanted to by now? No one gets suspended for that long. I beat up Mike Paiva all the time, and I haven’t been suspended for attacking a midget.

Scoops: Interesting theory! So when Vegas attacked you at the 13 year REUNION, he called it his statement to the ‘Main Eventers’, and that he was going to make an example out of you for everyone to see. Seeing how things have gone down over the last few months since REUNION, do you think his overconfidence is growing even more out of control?

Summers: I wish I could say no, but the truth is Scotty has gotten the better of me at every turn. He knocked me out cold at REUNION. He beat me in Dedham. He used his chain on me at the Big City Rumble to pin me again. I mean Steve [“The Turtle” Weiner] and I were able to eliminate him in the Rumble Match, but he dominated the beginning of that Match thanks to help from Atlee Greene. My goal for the rest of this year is to bring Scotty back down to earth, and prove that he’s just like everyone else. He’s not unstoppable.

Scoops: Whoa! What a scoop!

Summers: I still have a lot to accomplish here in NCW. I’m not ready for someone to come in and try to make a name off of my own career. I fully expect to be NCW Champion again. Maybe I’ll go after the Tag Team Titles with my pal Steve.  Vegas has all the right tools, and who knows maybe someday we’ll be fighting over that Heavyweight Title. As for now? I’m just ready to shut him up. September 17th Ruy Batello and I team up to take on the super team of Vegas & Davey Loomis, and I eagerly await the chance to take him down a notch.

Scoops: Well thank you again for that Doug and we look forward to see what happens next at FALLOUT!
